WASHINGTON. – The US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, stated that "difficult months" are ahead for the country while the cases of COVID-19 continue to increase, for which she considered it essential that Congress approve the 1,9 trillion social assistance package dollars proposed by President Joe Biden.

In her first public interview since taking over as Treasury secretary last week, Yellen said Biden is willing to work with Republicans to pass the bill with bipartisan support.

Democrats in Congress have signaled that if there is no GOP support, they are prepared to pass the bill on their own.

"We have some tough months ahead of us" until we get control of the pandemic, Yellen said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

When asked how it feels to be the first woman to serve as Treasury secretary, Yellen — who was also the first woman to lead the Federal Reserve — said the legacy she seeks to leave behind is the approval of a relief package by the coronavirus pandemic.

The United States is facing "an economic crisis that is as severe as I have ever seen in my life," Yellen said. The goal, she said, is to ensure "Americans don't suffer needlessly." External source
