Francis Suárez assures that he still receives his salary in Bitcoin

Even after a loss that sent the cryptocurrency down nearly 40% in the past two months, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said he is still receiving his city's salary in Bitcoin.
On Tuesday during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the politician said “I will point out, for the record, that it is not my only salary”, adding that “it is a different decision than if a person decided to take their salary in Bitcoin if it were the only source of income for them.”

The Republican mayor, who has been trying to promote Miami as a cryptocurrency and technology hub, said he is more focused on the utility of the currency and that the collapse of stablecoin TerraUSD had not changed his vision to foster the crypto industry in the city.
Similarly, the 44-year-old attorney emphasized the difference between protecting people from fraud and protecting people from loss. He pointed to the "tremendous volatility" that also exists in tech stocks.
"The government has had a tendency over time to try to protect people from loss, and you can't protect people from loss," he said. “That is the American system. That's what makes the investment. That's the risk component to winning as well."

Suarez, who also heads the US Conference of Mayors, said in a separate interview that it was flattering to have his name raised as a possible US presidential candidate in an editorial published this week by Washington Post commentator George Will. He pointed out that the country had never seen a president rise from a mayoralty.
"We've also never had a Hispanic president, and I think that's something the country would love to see at some point," said Suarez, the son of Cuban immigrants.

While Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a fellow Republican, is frequently mentioned as a possible presidential candidate and has raised his profile by addressing "culture war" issues popular with his base, Suarez has closed the partisan divide on many issues. in recent weeks, saying he believed in nurturing Miami's LGBTQ community and calling for greater efforts to fight global climate change.
