The IRS began doling out $290 billion in direct cash payments last week as part of the $2 trillion CARES Act stimulus bill. As part of the plan, the IRS is sending checks for $1,200 per person and $2,400 per married couple in the last few days to cope with the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“I just received my economic stimulus check, but it is for $2,400 dollars instead of $1,200. Last year in March, I filed the joint returns with my husband. My husband died in April of last year. Now I know that maybe that's why they sent me $2,400″, one of the people told a local media.

It's not immediately clear how many deceased people received direct deposits.

“We are aware of all the questions related to survivors and we are still working on that issue.said IRS spokesman Eric Smith.

Also in the past, more than 71.500 deceased Social Security beneficiaries received $250 stimulus payments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to a 2010 report from the Social Security Administration's Inspector General. Deceased Social Security recipients got $18 million of the $13 billion set aside for all Social Security recipients in that Obama-era stimulus package.
